A Counter Tops Care and Maintenance Guide

Your new stone, whether it is soapstone kitchen countertops or bathroom granite, will provide you with years of functionality, but in order to preserve its beauty some simple but essential maintenance is necessary. Most natural stones, as counter tops, or any other use, are porous and readily absorb liquids and moisture. In addition areas on your counter tops such as around the sink and stove for your kitchen countertop are likely to develop stains. Thus, protective measures should be taken to protect your counter tops.

The use of a sealer will help prevent staining of your counter tops in most situations. Even a sealed surface can stain if left in contact with a staining agent for a long period of time. Therefore, all spills on your counter tops should be wiped up as soon as possible, and coasters or napkins should be set when serving food or drinks on a stone bar, table or counter top. Soft drinks, coffee, tea and fruit juices contain mild acids and can etch the polished surface of a stone and stain quite rapidly. These should be cleaned off your counter tops immediately with a mild soap and warm water. If your counter tops are left unsealed, spills and everyday messes can easily penetrate the surface. The liquid eventually evaporates but the stain is left behind.

Remember, natural stone also needs to be cleaned to maintain its beauty. However, natural stone requires cleaning products specifically designed for stone's unique mineral composition. Most popular general purpose cleaners will etch or damage your stone counter tops or degrade the sealer, leaving your counter tops susceptible to stains.
